Today I have a treat for the ladies; a vintage Berlei Advertisement scanned from a 1953 coronation publication.
This particular vintage Berlei advertisement is an artistic black and white sketch of a model wearing the ‘Coronation Controlette’ and a see-through gown, topped off with a tiara no less:
- The brand name Berlei originated in Australia and was founded in 1917 by Frederick Richard Burley (1885-1954).
- Fred also founded Berlei UK with offices in Regents Street, London.
- Burley was committed to selling quality fitted garments along with a high standard of customer service.
- The highly trained staff began selling into Paris which in turn led to the brand being praised by Vogue.
I searched YouTube and found a Berlei advert from 1930. The film lasts nearly 4 minutes and the acting is terrible but it’s a wonderful piece of foundation wear history – “You can’t be without a foundation, my dear. It simply isn’t done.”
